Inscribed from the author to ‘Ninette’. Inscription reads “Ninette, with best wishes from Pan, otherwise Algernon Blackwood.”

The exact identity of of ‘Ninette’ is unknown; Blackwood frequently gave his friends nicknames different from their real first names. Blackwood biographer and scholar Mike Ashley has been unable to determine ‘Ninette’s identity but undoubtedly it was some young woman with whom Blackwood had an affectionate relationship.
